The Parc de l’Oreneta is located in the North of Barcelona, in Sarrià – Sant Gervasi area. This park is perfect for quality family time, where special Mediterranean flora and activities for children take place. Discover the history and the different activities of the park below and stay in our apartment for family in Sarrià.

History

The park was originally two farmlands, belonging to two different families and not linked to the city at all. There was the Can Bonavia farm belonging to the family of the Count Milà, and the Castell de l’Oreneta farm, where the Tous family had built a castle. The park would be named after the latter.

The two farmlands were meant to welcome a new hospital, since it was owned by the Red Cross for years. But, as the project never started, the Barcelona City Council acquired it and created a park that has been open to the public since 1978.

You can still see the remains of the castle on the higher part of the park, as it was unfortunately destroyed during the Spanish Civil War.

Flora

The flora is one of the main attraction of the park. Indeed, the original Mediterranean vegetation is well preserved. You will find here different tree typical mountain range species from Barcelona.

There are hundred year old species, like strawberry trees and mastic trees, as well as aromatic plants, like thyme, sweet bay or lavender, or newer species, planted over time, like eucalyptuses, cypresses or cedar.

Two trees are classified as Barcelona Trees of Local Interest Catalogne; a huge eucalyptus overlooking the city and a St Lucie cherry tree, near the pony stables.

Activities

You will find in the park several playgrounds, more or less original. While your kids enjoy it, you can see the beautiful panoramic view of the city.

Tips: strollers are not recommended in the park because of the steeply paths.

The most known activity is the miniature train, located in the upper part of the park. The Tren de l’Oreneta is opened on Sundays and Bank Holidays, from 10.30 am to 1.30 pm. It has been created by miniature train lovers who opened their association to the public. They will show you and explain their passion. There are different type of trains, from electric to steam trains. Ride a train for 2 euros per person and discover the park in a different way!

In the higher part of the park, you will also find a pony club, Poni Club Barcelona, where your kids can enjoy a little tour. The children must be accompanied by an adult. The club is opened only during weekends and Bank Holidays, from 11am to 2pm.
